Creating Meaningful New Year's Resolutions
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Los Angeles-based life coach Niki Cremmen who shared her insights on how to create meaningful and attainable New Year's Resolutions.
Here's what we learned:
Have you ever made a New Year's Resolution only to find your motivation fall away with the hype of the holiday season?
The new year can feel like a clean slate for so many of us. It’s important to set ourselves up for success when it comes to making and meeting our goals in the new year.
As a life coach, I have discovered a method for reaching goals that may seem a bit different from the standard will power method.
Here are a few tips for how to create successful New Year's Resolutions:
Make it attainable- The most important part of creating lasting change is to build trust with yourself. When we set goals that are too much of a reach, we may not be helping ourselves in the long run. It's better to set attainable goals and build over time than it is to overwhelm ourselves in the short term. Slow and steady wins the race!
Get clear on your intention- In order to build something it's important to have a strong foundation. The intention behind your goal is the foundation on which everything stands. Make sure to get clear on what your “why” is or else motivation is bound to fall away when things get challenging.
Come from a place of love - this is the secret sauce. So many seem to create New Year's Resolutions from a critical or judgmental place. One of the greatest myths is that we need to be hard on ourselves in order to move forward. See how treating yourself with love and kindness can be even more effective.
Instead of falling into the “just do it” attitude and pulling yourself up from the boot straps, think of what would it be like to to be gentle with yourself.
For example, If your goal is to get in shape, simply see if you can commit to moving your body every day. If you miss a day, don’t be too hard on yourself. Simply pick back up the next day.
Rather than placing our focus on extreme short term changes with our resolutions, my suggestion is to focus on being more effective in the long term!
When we set attainable goals, we need to get clear on our intentions and come from a place of love so we set a strong foundation for success to make our goals a reality.
